In Sasha’s communal apartment, forty eight Soviet citizens share one toilet, but not the toilet seat. Each family is required to provide their own. Thirteen nails, one for each family, are nailed into the kitchen wall next to the toilet. Thirteen toilet seats hang on those nails waiting to be used.
Another nail pierces small squares of torn newspaper that will be used in place of the toilet paper. While tearing the newspapers into squares, the tenants are very cautious. Many were arrested for accidentally damaging a picture of comrade Stalin printed in the newspaper.
